No entanto, com o aumento da eficiência e a miniaturização da electrónica moderna, muitos produtos que foram concebidos para utilizar pilhas AA estão a ser substituídos por modelos que aceitam pilhas AAA. Uma bateria AAA mede 44,5 mm de comprimento e 10,5 mm de diâmetro. As pilhas alcalinas AAA pesam cerca de 11,5 gramas cada, enquanto as pilhas de lítio AAA pesam aproximadamente 7,6 gramas, e as pilhas recarregáveis (Ni-MH) geralmente pesam entre 14 e 15 gramas. A tensão nominal das baterias alcalinas AAA e de lítio é de 1,5V, enquanto as baterias de Ni-MH ou NiCd são de 1,2V. A capacidade das baterias alcalinas AAA é geralmente de 900 a 1155mAh (3240 a 4158 Coulombs).
